The Sky of Samadhi

Ralph Waldo Emerson gifted us with this thought, " Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year. He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety. Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in. Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense. This new day is too dear, with its hopes and invitations, to waste a moment on the yesterdays."

I believe this to be true when practicing yoga. I think what Emerson is referring to is a state of mind described in "The Yoga Sutras of Patangali" called Samadhi (enlightenment or bliss).

Although Samadhi is placed last in the list of yoga practices, it isn't something we work toward, you might instead think of it as the sky, always there, holding the light of the sun, moon, and stars.

Often we cannot see beyond the clouds of our own emotions, expectations, desires, and the weight of our yesterdays. The practice of yoga opens the way to the sky experience of Samadhi through conscious movements of body and breath. Yoga can teach us to leave our yesterdays behind and live in today's adventures, to bask in the clear skies of Samadhi.

Sending love from my mat to yours.

Namaste,

Kathryn
